    Quin objectiu persegueix la iniciativa?
The lack of access to safe water affects global development and is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An estimated 2200 million people worldwide lack access to safe water, which negatively impacts economic growth and poverty reduction. Some regions' economic growth could decrease by up to 6% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2050 due to this issue. To address this problem and support the SDGs, a Smart System for Water Treatment (SSWT) is being designed and developed using microfluidics-based manufacturing technologies. We firmly believe that clean water directly helps to transform lives and prevent needless deaths. Healthy children become healthier adults who can make a greater contribution to the planet.
En què consisteix i per què és innovadora?
The Smart System for Water Treatment uses a novel approach by manufacturing multi-layer micro/nano fiber-based membranes (ENMs) that have a high surface-volume ratio and porosity, using a variety of polymers that can be functionalized with different nanoparticles for water treatment applications. The SSWT is designed to be manufactured with multi-layer composite ENMs that can address various contaminants, including emerging micropollutants, metals, pathogens, hazardous chemicals, and organic pollutants. The innovation of this initiative lies in the use of multi-layer composite ENMs that allow for a reduction in the size and scale of water treatment, making it a promising solution for sustainable water treatment.
Qui hi participa de la comunitat UPC?
Researchers and students from DECA department
Quins actors externs a la UPC hi participen?
The SSWT project aims to address not only scientific and technical challenges but also social and cultural aspects to ensure the successful adoption and implementation of the innovation. The project aims to involve local stakeholders to democratize the SSWT initiative in Ecuador, where almost 30% of the population cannot access safe drinking water.
En quins conceptes es preveuen utilitzar els 2000 € del premi durant el 2023?
The funding of 2000 will be utilized to procure materials and equipment for the SSWT project.
Entre quines dates es desenvolupa la iniciativa?
The duration of the SSWT project is from June until September.
Quin impacte té la iniciativa en la perspectiva de gènere, la sostenibilitat, la inclusió i/o l'equitat?
Access to safe drinking water is a concern for all humans, regardless of their background. The SSWT project is committed to promoting and upholding the principles of gender equality, ensuring that all individuals involved in the project have equal opportunities and are treated fairly. By valuing diversity and inclusivity, the SSWT project hopes to foster a collaborative and innovative environment that can lead to meaningful and impactful solutions for global challenges related to water treatment and access.
Quins Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible desenvolupa la teva iniciativa?
ODS 6. Aigua Neta i Sanejament

The SSWT project aims to address not only scientific and technical challenges but also social and cultural aspects to ensure the successful adoption and implementation of the innovation. To accomplish this goal, the project plans to involve local stakeholders and democratize the SSWT initiative in several countries, including Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, and Mexico, where more than 30% of the population does not have access to safe drinking water.
